Ka Whaihanga means to make, the aim for this series of wānanga [10 days is was to bring together Māori weavers with varied skills to share ideas and produce work for an exhibition together. The wānanga were planned as a timely response to the impacts Covid19 on the creative community. This series of gatherings offer the makers a space to come together and re-connect with each other post-lockdown. To meet kanohi ki te kahohi will be a re-energising experience for some of the artists who have struggled with project cancellations and postponements. Ka Whaihanga the exhibition will be held over 4 days at John Scott’s iconic Futuna Chapel in Karori. The modernist architecture built on the aesthetics of a Māori kaupapa offers a distinctive space to present objects. The exhibition will feature new work which will be a result of the wānanga series. To support the exhibition and promote it to a wider national audience an online catalogue will be available with high quality images of both the objects and the artists making.
